Packetyzer is a network protocol analyzer for Windows, also know as a packet sniffer. It is based on the Ethereal project.

Packetyzer provides a Windows user interface for the Ethereal packet capture and dissection library. Ethereal is used by network professionals around the world for troubleshooting, analysis, software and protocol development, and education. Ethereal has all of the standard features expected in a protocol analyzer, and several features not otherwise available.

Network Chemistry has taken advantage of Ethereal's open source license to add a Windows front end to extend its use. Packetyzer can capture from virtually any network adapter and supports many advanced features.

Packetyzer can read capture files in the following formats:

  • tcpdump (libpcap) and Etherea
  • Sun snoop and atmsnoop
  • Shomiti/Finisar Surveyor
  • Novell's LANalyzer
  • NAI's Sniffer™ (compressed or uncompressed)
  • Microsoft Network Monitor
  • AIX's iptrace
  • NetXray™
  • Sniffer™ Pro
  • RADCOM's WAN/LAN Analyzer
  • Lucent/Ascend WAN router debug output
  • HP-UX nettl
  • Cisco Secure IDS iplog
  • The pppd log (pppdump-format)
  • Dump output from Toshiba's ISDN routers
  • i4btrace from the ISDN4BSD project
  • WildPackets EtherPeek and AiroPeek
  • Visual Networks' Visual UpTime

Packetyzer supports all protocols which are supported by Ethereal, including IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN management frame, IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN, 802.1q Virtual LAN, 802.1x Authentication, and many more. For more information, view the complete list of supported protocols.
